Opening Week Upset Predictions

Vermont Basketball Week 1

The first few weeks of non divisional games give us a chance to make some upset picks. Who we like Dec 5th through Dec 8th.

Fair Haven Union defeats Burlington Seahorses Dec 5th

Given the solidarity of the program and travel we believe Fair Haven Slaters may edge the Burlington Seahorses who will be entirely new. The head coach of Burlington has brought in several recruits from his private club by way of school choice. Along with club recruits Burlington High School head basketball coach also brings his three children from Essex into the mix. With opening day 6 days away its likely to be an imported club representing BHS. Time will tell if the formula and gamble pays but our bet is BHS will only get stronger as the season unfolds. If the Slaters can pull the D2 D1 upset they’ve got that swagger and confidence heading into the season. Slaters will need confidence and development to make a title run vs Montpelier in 2023-2024.

Lakers over Middlebury Dec 5th

We like Colchester this year in all their non divisional games. We anticipate Colchester with Zack Davis and Fred Bacon and Vinny Wagner to handle the production for the Lakers.

TOSS UP Montpelier v South Burlington Dec 8th

Can’t call this one. You’ll have to see it for yourself. This is likely the gem of week 1. Montpelier, reigning division two champions will travel to South Burlington, the Wolf’s Den for a must see matchup. South Burlington is a final four D1 pick while Montpelier stands apart within the D2 division and odds on favorite to collect another chip this season. Can the Wolves stop Carson Cody? Can the Falcons stop Bergmans? Can’t call it, will come down to execution and protection possessions.

St. Johnsbury beats Brattleboro Union Dec 8th

We anticipate Rex Hauser and co will have no issues against Brattleboro. St Johnsbury disciplined offense and defense will be a tough matchup in week 1 for Brattleboro.

Burr and Burton over Fair Haven Dec 8th

Burr and Burton Academy returns several of their players last year. Despite the road travel we still like the Bulldogs in this matchup.

Bobwhites cruise against Middlebury Dec 8th

The Bobwhites made it to the final four last year. While they lost their talented senior class a strong nucelus remains in a well ran and competitive program. We’ll take BFA over Middlebury this round.
